PRP

My GF has these super long range baby monitors. Last Monday she connected with the accountant on the main floor of her building–she has the only apartment in the building–and gave him the baby monitor, so if there was an emergency, he could get her daughter out of their apartment. We went to the orthopedic surgeon in my car early Monday morning.

I didn’t ask her to come with me. I was grateful that she did.

When we got to the orthopedic surgeon’s practice, we were in the Physical Therapy Clinic instead. We had to go to another building altogether.

It’s so good when you’re anticipating something to have someone there with you.

She and I found the building.

We talked a whole bunch and I was glad because my appointment didn’t begin until 8:35 and I was told to get there at 8:15 and we had arrived at 8.

We went back to an exam room and the nurse took a fat vial of blood out of my arm. My GF loved the color.

She said that she’d centrifuge my blood for 8-minutes.

The orthopedic surgeon came in after 5-minutes and I introduced him to ________. He went over my MRI mostly with her. I thought that was cool. She has nothing to do with my DNR and isn’t my emergency contact (ex. baby monitor in the first paragraph), but I liked the way it wasn’t a thing for him.

I just introduced her by saying, “This is ________.” That’s always what I say. I don’t think saying, “This is my girlfriend,” make sense. She is a person with her name. Regardless, I liked him just going with it and he didn’t know if she was my sister, spouse, intimate partner or friend.

The orthopedic surgeon measured my crummy range of motion (It’s been bad since I was 13.). Then he explained the process to both of us. The nurse came back in with a new vial and it looked like urine now.

He started talking to me about mountains. I told him why my favorite one was my favorite one. He said that he was going to numb the area and that was the worse part. It wasn’t though.

Then he said he was going to inject my knee. That felt so weird. It was really gross. The process lasted probably a minute or two for the injection part. I didn’t watch, but ________ did.

He asked me to extend and flex my knee a few times and we were done. We could go back to the apartment and pick up the baby monitor from the Accountant. She had a client so I had to leave quickly. I felt numb emotionally. I was glad that she was there to support.

That night we went to a community showing of a movie with her daughter and best friend. Her best friend said that my GF told her that I didn’t even flinch.

I still have quite a lot of pain. I don’t know if I can hike downhill. I did makeup cardio on Friday night.

I was so sore afterward and yesterday too. I’m not sure how much it’s worked to cushion the fact that I don’t have cartilage behind my left knee cap anymore after April 3rd. I’ll have to see.

Google Protein Rich Plasma (PRP) if you’ve never heard of it.

The experience has been emotionally triggering as it’s a reminder of my initial injury in 1988, and the fact that my knee is living on borrowed time. I don’t know how long it will be before I have to have partial knee replacement. In the meantime, I just want to see if I can hike downhill.

I weigh 142.6. It’s funny because women always guess me at 130 and then when I tell them what I weigh they always say the same thing. “Muscle weighs more than fat.”

I think that I want my first hike to be with a new love interest that I have. She and I have been exchanging lots of messages on Teams and talked briefly on the phone recently. Our next step is a video call on Teams. She’s 3-inches taller than me, so if I can’t get down when we hike, I can lean on her.

I have never been able to bend my left knee very much since I was 13

Knee

Five-days after I last wrote in my blog there was a sloppy, snowy puddle in a dark stairwell at one of my sites. I should’ve been more careful, because a 15-year-old who I was walking out after our session fell there 20-minutes before. I helped him up. He had scrapped his shin. I thought “Don’t wear Crocs.”

Except that the stairwell is really dark when it’s overcast, so I didn’t see the puddle and fell at the base of the staircase. My leg went under and behind me. The knee hyperextended. All my weight fell on it. I had to awkwardly pull my leg out from under me. I tried to do the group that is scheduled, but my knee just kept swelling. I had to call our Human Resources Department and then get a case number and head to Urgent Care.

Although it happened on the 3rd, I had problems with the insurance adjusters. I didn’t get a MRI until the 30th. The Physician’s Assistant called me yesterday. It’s three things. Two are old things. One is brand new. I have damaged all the cartilage behind my knee cap.

I have severe osteoarthritis. This diagnosis isn’t shocking. My leg was in a full leg plaster cast for 14-months as an adolescent. I didn’t get a walking cast for a long time and then had to rehab my knee for a couple of years.

I have chondromalacia. I was born knock kneed on my left leg, and then getting hit by a car and having 7 fractures was largely unhelpful.

I will finally see the Physician on Friday. However the Physician’s Assistant told me that what is likely is that he’ll send me to the Orthopedic Surgeon for a consultation.

I’m in very good physical shape for 50. I have a realistic, yet mostly positive outlook. I think if I’m being honest with myself, it’s really a matter of timing and figuring out the best way to get a total knee replacement down the road or sooner.

It’s been very sad for me to do a super long hike quickly and then be like someone in her 70s coming back down. I am so slow with downhill anything. This issue has been going on for a long time. Now, it’s so much pain that I haven’t been able to bike to work, run on the treadmill or do the elliptical, had to quit bowling and couldn’t be on either of the kickball teams this spring.

Oof. Any thoughts?

Moderation

I haven’t had a drink in 15-days. I didn’t crave beer at bowling last night, and I think it’s largely because the beer there is just ok. It’s also massively overpriced.

I’m not a sommelier. I don’t make beer. I can’t drink hard alcohol, because I almost immediately fall asleep when I do so.

I realized last week that I largely drink because I’m hungry. It’s quick sugar for me.

Since the pandemic, I would have one more beer if I had a stressful day. Otherwise, I was simply getting some calories into my system, which one knows are simply sugar.

I am still very funny without an ounce of alcohol. I don’t need it to be me. And last night, I was realizing that I am louder when I’m drinking because I was a quiet bowler and celebrator.

However, I’m wondering which of my friendships are beer friendships.

I can imagine that I will have some shifts…

It’s not that I judge what others are doing. I am just waking up. I saw LA as a vacation alcoholic and probably solo alcoholic when she met me at the end of my birthday trip last summer. Then, I am still in the planning stages of how we’ll intervene with my former colleague. I just don’t want to have my own clouding right now.

I am super close with five sets of my neighbors on my street. Two came over Sunday night to drop off a New Year’s gift and we talked. The man in this DINK couple is doing dry January… His wife told me about 2 intervention conversations that she had to lead with two friends.

Alcohol suspension and disuse is all around me.

I read this article today and a few points were similar ones that I’ve made when I entered this period of non-drinking. I will drink again, but I don’t know when. I know that I won’t be drinking excessively ever. I never did that much anyway, and was simply dependent.

I also finally have a plan for beginning psychedelics.

Before it was legal, I spent about 18-months to a couple of years smoking marijuana. I completely stopped when I was in a suite with friends and was convinced that a helicopter was landing on me and that dominoes on the table were going to crash and break. I don’t even care to try strains of it that friends recommend to me. I don’t like it. I hate what it does to me personally.

What do think dependency is? What is an addiction?

Health

I felt like complete poo since the 19th of November. I wouldn’t have worked on the 19th, but I had to attend another person’s meeting and run my own. I also have realized that with not being at work for 6 work days that I don’t like my job anymore.

I’m going to put my name in a hat. I’ll keep my therapist job once a week and let the organization place me in sites. I really don’t want to be working with clients who are younger than 11; however, to escape this site, I’ll be more flexible than I am normally.

It feel so good to be physically healthy.

Sleeping

It’s likely that I am now fully in menopause. I haven’t had a cycle this year. It’s strange, because my mother had cycles until she was in her early 60s. There are only 74-days left this year, so we’ll see.

I haven’t slept really well since before I got married. My ex-wife had nightmares and would often scream in the night. Of course, given that she was in state of sleep paralysis, the scream was like a moan until she could wake herself up and then really start screaming. She eventually slept in the spare bedroom, but because it’s across a fairly narrow hallway, I would have to go over there and either wake her up or knock on the door if she had it locked. My sleep became poor during my marriage, but if she was elsewhere, as she was sometimes for a few months, I could always sleep 7-9 hours.

My son has been out of my house for 15-months so humans don’t wake me up.

I do that myself.

Last night, I was wide awake at 12:30 (I guess Friday morning is accurate). I got up. Reread text messages between my girlfriend and I whilst sipping Valerian tea. I slept another 4-hours.

I feel fine.

I had two rounds of dreams as well.

I would like to go back to 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep. And I’ve had medical advice from a FNP. I’ll reproduce some of it here.

Magnesium can make me feel like I have a sleep hangover. I wake up and I’m groggy. Not that the FNP suggested this oral over the counter, but the same is true of taking melatonin. I feel groggy the next day. I have taken CBD and had mixed results with it (not medically advised), and sometimes it also can make me groggy.

I shouldn’t read in bed. I should read in the living room and then go to bed afterward.

Unfortunately, I grind my teeth. However, I have an incredibly expensive custom nightguard now, so I’m adjusted to that just now. Even that took time, because I guess I was trying to grind my teeth initially, because they would feel weird when I woke up and took out the nightguard. They feel fine now, and have for the entirety of this week.

I also sometimes fist my hands in sleep and wake up with hands so sore that it feels like I’ve been boxing. That hasn’t happened in a few months though.

What sleep advice do you have for a 50-year-old? How do you sleep? How has the quality of your sleep changed?

I have a million thoughts in my head and have so many topics that I’d like to write about. I think that I need to make a plan. I haven’t written in a really long time and don’t know how to complete one coherent post. I would appreciate anyone making a comment with a vote of where I should start.

Dental Emergency / Going to an Indie Film

I have told myself that I won’t say no to anything social. It means that I’ll drag myself anywhere that I’ve been invited. I went to the movies with Vegan yesterday and the movie was, well, quite odd. I bought tickets for a 3:30 showing of the film and told Vegan that we’d meet there Friday. However, I hadn’t expected what happened with my health.

I have a good enough immune system that I don’t get sick enough to miss work. I have worked a few half days and taken off an hour twice, but that has been mostly due to my loathing being in my other building just meeting rather than conducting my work with clients. I had this persistent sinus infection for a long time which infiltrated the roof of my mouth and teeth. The swelling got so bad yesterday that I realized that I needed to see my dentist. The gums were sore to the touch and all of my teeth hurt.

The dental assistant was having a lot of trouble with the computer for my x-rays. I think it likely needed software updates. When she finally projected pictures you could see the swelling on the left side of my teeth and face. When the dentist came in she hit each of my back teeth with a little metal mallet. EXCURIATING on the tooth in question. “I have to open the tooth and drain the infection now. Then, I’m referring you to the endodontist.” Lovely. It’s being 49 and it’s time for a root canal.

She had to take intraoral pictures next. I was probably in three different chairs for 45-minutes. Finally, the dental assistant put the numbing agent in my mouth so that I could start drooling. That is always super fun. Probably another five-minutes elapsed and she gave me my shot. Then my dentist saw a crack. So, we got up to go back to the place where the interior camera was and she took one more shot, and that’s when she showed me a crack from one side to the other and the crossing of the root. 😦

The dentist filed my tooth down to practically nothing and put glue on it. I have to see a specific dental specialist the week of the 25th for an extraction. Apparently, he will put a screw in the place where tooth #14 was and then it will heal over until July 1st when my dentist will build an implant. Fun. 10-days of amoxicillin.

I paid my $72 co-pay and hightailed out of there. I got to the theater with three-minutes to spare and Vegan gave me a side hug and joked about my tooth. All should have been well, but one of the characters gets his teeth knocked out–violently. I didn’t have any experience with the actress in the lead until the movie, and I generally liked the strange film. It evoked Tarantino and the video “Human Behaviour” by Bjork for me. Vegan was horrified. I didn’t know that she couldn’t tolerate any violence and is not a fan of dark humor. Can someone let me know what they think of “Love Lies Bleeding?” Did anyone see it after going to the dentist? Hehe.

48 Hours

I used to watch those when I’d get back to my room when I was on a solo vacation. Detectives had to make quick investigative moves within the initial exploration of a crime and there would be a countdown timer running to break up scenes and visually illustrate how cold a trail can go if you don’t have major lead for crime within two days. The climber gives me feedback, has dinner with me, we look at two published books which fit best the genre that we’re writing in, she talks about being excited to sketch, we cuddle on the couch and talk for probably nearly two hours, later we kiss awhile too in the bedroom, she goes home to her partner, I work all day the next day and learn about affirming transgender youth, have fraud on my debit card, go to dinner with Aquarius and Ballet Dancer, get up today, am going to box, do a bit of the guitar class and go to our old haunt for bowling. Whew.

Love Life Progression

She had something really intense happen in her household. She had to support, drive around, and then did make it over. Initially she said that she didn’t really want to talk about it, and then she told me details. I held her incredibly tight. When I said, “I’m shocked that you’re here,” she said, “You of all people are someone who understands these things.” She said that she needed distraction, so I opened good tequila, and we had that and the taco soup that I made. I cleared the dishes and we looked at the pages. She gave me some feedback and I took notes. Then I said that we should sit down. I got her a blanket and we were talking. My terrier was in between us and I said that she was a cuddle buzzkill because I am mostly legs and she’s really muscular so our torsos aren’t a perfect fit sideways on a love seat. She moved my dog, pivoted sideways and I slid behind her. We talked like that for probably close to two-hours.

There is a huge shift since the end of January wherein I told her that I don’t know her well. She offers a lot to me. She also converses with me back and forth when I ask questions. It feels so much different than it ever has. She told me that she watches my hands on the steering wheel and I told her that her ears are the cutest ones that I have ever seen and I look at them when her hair is up. We both said that we could probably comment on hands and ears because the nice guy would be asleep in the back of the car anyway. She can do this thing where if she has contact with your upper body that she can match the pace of your breathing. Later I laid on her chest and she said, “What are you doing?” I said, “Sorry, laying on you like this makes my heart race!” She said, “You’re barely breathing.” Later she asked if she could kiss me and I said, “Of course.” I hope that helped my breathing!

No more talk therapy for me personally

The Rower has a crush on a woman who does an alternate trauma treatment. It’s called breath work. She cried for two hours once in a session. I think that I’ll do some. I also want to start supervised psychedelic treatment. I’m so sick of anxiety and disrupted sleep. I would like to work on the way that I breathe and carry myself.

My son wants to move back home. I really don’t want him here. I’ve had almost 7-months of empty nesting and am perfectly fine seeing him once a week. He also has this prince thing wherein he has expectations of meals and such all the time. I find that I can’t be around someone who cannot follow a schedule. How can watching some gamer that you don’t know beat a video game on YouTube for hours on end be fulfilling? He also has stopped moving and says that he is reluctant to have his fellow students work on him because of the state of his body. Why do you only eat food out of boxes and bags then? I’m writing this stuff, but will be diplomatic on Monday night about it. He just can’t simply move back home because now that he’s in school, and it’s hard to do school and live with his Dad. I’m very sorry that his father is an alcoholic and binge drinker. That does suck. I also am not a servant who you get to say “F-U” to constantly.

In terms of the theme of this entry, I think that I’m making progress. Maybe this entry is more like 49-years? It’s taken me this long to get solid about what I truly want and where I’m going.

Goals

How many people are writing about these today? Or tomorrow? Anyway. It’s really important for me to think about.

I went indoor climbing and finally got up a route because I watched my old work husband’s wife do it and studied her body for handholds and steps up, and then had lots of encouragement from them both. I was so proud. When we were at sushi afterward, I got a text from from the photographer ensuring me that she only wanted to be friends. I wrote back, “Want to play pickleball? We can definitely be friends.” Then weirdness ensued.

My old work colleague who had kids a year after I had my son actually reached out to me Monday and said that she wanted to hang out on Wednesday, so although I’d not heard from the photographer, I said that she and I would play pickleball with her in the morning. It usually is only about an hour. I thought that the photographer and I would hike afterward.

My old work colleague cancelled in the morning on Wednesday via text at 6:30 a.m. She had named noon as a start time. I was so irritated. Why call me and say that you want to hang out on Wednesday? She has an extra racket, so I needed her. I only have mine. The photographer has never played before and wants to learn. My old work colleague was also bringing another woman so that we could all play. Have no idea why she didn’t bother to look at her work schedule. The photographer said that it was cool and she was thinking a bike ride, but it’s going to rain. I sent her a picture that I’d sent the climber in November of my bike on a No Parking Sign at my main building that I work in with ice everywhere in the background. I ride almost no matter what. Almost. I just slowly said that I was sorry, and I hope that our paths cross sometime soon. I have to sell a house in the fall, so she’s the one that I want to do that. Also, I always do what I say I’ll do and if she contacts me, I’ll take her safely up a high peak.

I see my best friend tonight, so I want to when I hug her just say, “Hey, ___ wants to be friends and I’m totally fine with that.” I don’t want to talk about it much because they’re pretty decent friends. I’ve realized that when I meet people through my best friend that there is no way to keep much clean and she’s kinda in our relationship. Not really a big deal, because she doesn’t have too many single friends, so I don’t see it happening again.

One of my goals is to just stay calm and cool about everything with respect to woman who you want to date. You can’t control other people, and honestly you wouldn’t want to do so if you’re being honest with yourself.

I have to grade today and tomorrow. I haven’t graded.

Instead, I worked because I need the money because one of my checks was $400 less than it usually is and that job doesn’t start again in February like it usually does. Yikes. So I did two cases and got quite a bit of money, but had to pay my best friend $300 for rent and other things that I need for cases. I changed my disclosure statement to reflect administrative fees going forward that I’ll collect directly from clients for $150 per case. Doesn’t solve my problem of really needing money now though. The issue is that I’m still paying my ex wife every month until August, and then in the late summer or fall when I sell a house, the buyers can pay her directly through the title company the remainder that she and I decided upon. That is a burden externally and internally for me. I need to do my very best to keep spending down and also beg if I need to for a monthly case. Those will mean that I only have to come up with $70 extra to pay my ex wife.

Money won’t always be like this. In fact, I talked to my best friend from my first round of grad school last week, and I’ll go see her in Germany in November if I can get a passport quickly right after the house sells. Mine expired in 2014. I’ve only been to BC and Mexico. I will have quite a lot of money in the fall, and I do want to go to Europe. I want to see Rhineland, which is where my mother’s folks originated, and I want to see Bavaria and the Alps. Otherwise, I am open to whatever and so lucky to finally have actual money so I can travel abroad. It’s coming, but I have to be very careful right now.

A second goal is to think about all spending until the house that I can sell is sold.

I had wonderful prowl last night with my old friend. She fixed her makeup expertly and looked really pretty. I am very fit right now. I don’t think that my waistline has looked like this since probably 2013. My old friend kept saying that she needed to pull her shirt out because she didn’t want her belly to show. I think that some of it has to do that I don’t have any body fat in my waistline and really that has been a long time since I’ve been without love handles and the like. I think that the oblique work that I’ve been doing has been helpful. She is more than welcome to do circuits or anything with me!

That brings me to my next couple of goals. I really want to get bigger again. I used to have huge biceps. I had a weight day that you can do with 20-lb dumbells and then at least 30-lbs on a barbell–you can use more weight. I got freaked out because my orthopedic surgeon said that it might be best for me not to do anything over my head anymore. She didn’t say no. So, I want to do that routine once weekly and I can do that at home. It doesn’t require anything that I don’t have.

A third goal is to add back my A Weights day to my routines.

I took my old friend out to dinner last night and we drank sake with our food. I can’t believe how much I ate. I had done 6 machines for triceps, biceps and rhomboids, and did drink 32-ounces of whey protein and ate a sandwich, but I was still starving. Then at the bar for our prowl, I had two beers over the course of four-hours and drank three glasses of water. I feel tip top today.

My fourth goal is to monitor well drinking and never over indulge.

I bought myself a Christmas present. It’s beautiful. It’s a guitar with a built-in tuner that is 3/4 size. I want to get better. I’ve been playing and singing “A Little Bit of Love” and just started learning “One Sweet Love.” I have played, historically, classical guitar, so I do look stupid with a steel string acoustic up in the air on my left side, but I can’t play otherwise. I have been singing my ass off at home. I also sometimes play “Every Rose has it’s Thorn,” but the range is a bit on the low end. Anyway, because of this activity, last night when I could hear myself, I thought it sounded good. I sang “We Belong.” (It’s really hard to hear yourself in a bar on karaoke speakers.) Three people came up directly and said that I was amazing. A little, young blond woman talked to my friend and she motioned to me sitting on the couch and the girl beamed. Also, there was a hazel eyed dark haired woman who smiled at me several times afterward and also would come into the room where the stage was. At the end of the night, I went to the bar and tapped her shoulder. She didn’t talk to me. I said, “I just wanted to say ‘Happy New Year’ to you,” and she smiled so big. She thanked me. Then she hugged me and we hugged tight. It felt so good. It felt similar to hugging the climber.

My fifth goal is to be bold and approach women for a nice exchange and maybe a hug.

My sixth goal is to keep singing.

My seventh goal is to practice a bit of classical again, and get really good on my beautiful guitar with chords and singing simultaneously.

I was disappointed to not have a cycling and hiking partner anymore. I don’t think that the photographer really bikes all that much. I think she’s more into yoga. Also, she said that she wanted to do a less intense hike, so the 5-8 miles much have been a bit much for her baseline.

So, I’d like to meet a younger woman who is very driven to hike and bike. I only say younger because women in their mid and late forties don’t have the energy that I do with the exception of my best friend from work who wished me good luck when I’d not connected with the climber in a couple of weeks. She is badass. I am pretty sure that she turns 50 in May. However, she lives in TX. And she just bikes around on a cruiser.

My eighth goal is to find a pretty woman to hike and bike with during the week and for a couple of hours when it works on the weekend.

I’m bold, and direct. I have no need to dwell on what a woman is doing when she’s not around or making plans with me. I’ve always been able to support myself and my son. I have no desire to support a woman. I’m on a path to financial solvency. I’m fit and getting fitter. I care passionately about my health. I have a distinctive speaking voice and through a hobby am getting my singing voice to meet my deep and easy to listen to speaking voice. I love women. I love hugs with chemistry. I took guitar as an elective in high school and now have a beautiful instrument. I want to get really good. I love my bike. I love to hike.
